
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 12, 2025, expressed immense pride over the inscription of the “Maratha Military Landscapes of India” into the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. The recognition includes 12 grand forts, with 11 in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu, celebrating the strategic and cultural legacy of the Maratha Empire.
In a statement, PM Modi said the Maratha legacy stands for good governance, military prowess, cultural pride, and social welfare. He urged citizens, especially the youth, to visit these historical forts and connect with the rich heritage of the Marathas.
The Prime Minister also reminisced about his 2014 visit to Raigad Fort, where he paid homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, calling it a cherished memory.
This UNESCO recognition further solidifies the global importance of India’s historic military architecture and the inspirational legacy of Maratha rulers.
